The UK just switched on the most powerful supercomputer it’s ever built.
Housed in a low-carbon modular data centre in Bristol, the Isambard-AI machine – a £225m taxpayer-funded facility – has now been made fully operational as part of the government’s expanding public AI infrastructure. The aim is to put advanced AI capabilities to work on public challenges – from cutting NHS waiting lists to helping tackle climate change.
Named after the famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, the supercomputer is the 6th most powerful in Europe, and 11th in the world. Because of its innovative cooling system, it is the fourth greenest supercomputer in the world.
“We put the most powerful computer system in the country into the hands of British researchers and entrepreneurs. Isambard-AI doesn’t just close the gap with our international competitors – it propels the UK to the forefront of AI discovery,” said Tech Secretary Peter Kyle.
The government plans to invest another £1 billion to grow the country’s AI-dedicated computer capacity twentyfold by 2030.
It’s one of many bold moves signalling the UK’s intent to lead on AI innovation, following closely behind a new partnership agreement with OpenAI that could bring advanced AI tools into public services like education, defence and justice.
These developments are part of a growing global race to unlock the economic and social benefits of AI, while still navigating the risks.

But where are we really at in 2025? And what does meaningful, responsible AI innovation actually look like in practice?
The state of AI in 2025
AI has moved far beyond experimental research labs; it’s now woven into day-to-day tools used across every business department from marketing and HR, to operations and customer service. From AI-powered customer chat to data analysis and automated content creation, the technology is becoming more embedded and more accessible.
This wave of democratisation has been powered by open-source models, enterprise-scale platforms, and no-code interfaces that allow non-technical users to explore what AI can do.
According to McKinsey’s State of AI 2025 report, over 70% of companies have already adopted at least one form of generative AI, with organisations working to mitigate a growing set of gen-AI-related risks; hiring for new AI-related roles, and upskilling employees to participate in AI deployment.
But alongside the progress, comes broader conversations around trust, governance, and the long-term impact of AI systems as they become more powerful and autonomous.
Building trust and transparency
As AI systems become more capable, ethical design becomes a must-have; with questions arising around transparency, integrity and practical use of data. Who builds these systems? Whose data is used? How are decisions made, and how can people understand or challenge them?
Fortunately, we’re seeing alignment across industry and policy, and a notable shift from the early ‘move fast and break things’ ethos to a more measured and responsible approach to AI development.
Governments, global institutions, and businesses alike are investing heavily in AI governance, as a core design principle. Leading businesses are investing in bias detection, explainable AI (a set of processes that make the decisions and outputs of AI systems understandable and interpretable for humans), and diverse AI development teams. Dedicated teams are developing auditing tools to track model performance, flag bias, and prevent harmful outputs.
The EU AI Act, new executive orders in the US, the OECD AI Principles, and voluntary frameworks from coalitions like the ‘Partnership on AI’ are all landing on similar principles and establishing a baseline of safety, transparency, and accountability.
Momentum is building towards a more collaborative and values-led future, where innovation is balanced with trust, human rights, and long-term societal impact.
The next phase: agentic, assistive AI
We’re now entering a new frontier of AI – systems that don’t just respond to prompts, but plan, reason and act on behalf of users. Known as agentic AI, these tools can help professionals manage tasks, analyse vast datasets, and automate complex workflows.
Imagine clinical agents that scan decades of medical research to assist doctors, or climate agents that simulate impact scenarios in real-time. These aren’t hypothetical; they’re already being prototyped, and will become far more common over the next 12 to 24 months.
This next generation of AI will also be multimodal, meaning it can understand and generate across text, image, video, speech and code. That opens up new creative and analytical possibilities in everything from architecture to education to digital media.
AI for good: innovation with purpose
Some of the most promising AI applications are happening in areas that matter most.
Take Owkin, for example – a biotech company using AI to accelerate drug discovery and clinical research. Their K Navigator platform helps scientists explore multimodal patient data more efficiently, reducing time to insights and supporting more personalised treatments.
In climate science, AI is helping governments and researchers understand emissions pathways, optimise renewable energy systems, and respond faster to extreme weather events.
In government, tools like Humphrey – the UK civil service’s AI productivity suite – are quietly showing how automation can support, not replace, human roles in delivering public value.
The real opportunity lies in applying AI to the world’s most pressing problems – not just automating what we already do, but reimagining what’s possible.
