From common skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis, through to rarer ones like alopecia or lipeodema – awareness, understanding and treatment starts with science. Explore the stories showcasing the research, developments and breakthroughs that can improve outcomes, physically and psychologically, for those living with skin disease.

Delivering impactful solutions

Developed and funded by Almirall. Dermatological conditions can have a detrimental impact on people’s lives, both on their physical wellbeing and on their mental health. Almirall is dedicated to medical dermatology, advancing science, and innovating to deliver impactful solutions to help people realise their hopes and dreams for a healthy life.

Role of dermocosmetic skincare in acne management

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, yet it is notoriously difficult to cure, and can leave behind scars, both physical and mental, if untreated. However, new studies show that dermocosmetic skincare specifically formulated for those prone to acne, like the La Roche-Posay Effaclar range, plays an important role in keeping skin in a good condition and helping improve patient compliance alongside medical treatments. Consultant Dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto discusses why she includes a skincare recommendation to her patients, and her former patient Alice Liveing, shares how she felt about her skin.

Educating the public on lipoedema

Lipoedema is a condition that causes painful fat buildup in the legs, hips, and arms and affects millions of women worldwide. Lipoedema UK is helping to educate the public and healthcare professionals about the disease, as well as advocating for improved diagnosis and access to better treatments.

A better quality of life

Developed and funded by UCB. Psoriasis now affects around 2% of people in the UK*. UCB Pharma are using advancements in science to find new ways to reduce the inflammatory response in patients, leading to a better quality of life for those suffering with the disease. *(Source: NHS Inform)

Funding research for all types of skin diseases

The science behind skin is always evolving, and medical breakthroughs for skin disease can lead to life-changing results for patients. However, it can mean years of research to get to that point. The British Skin Foundation is the only UK charity to fund research for all types of skin diseases, one recipient of that research funding is Dr Christos Tziotzios.

British Skin Foundation

The British Skin Foundation is the only UK charity that raises money to fund research into all types of skin diseases, including skin cancer. Sixty percent of British people currently suffer from or have suffered with a skin disease at some point during their lifetime. Whilst some skin conditions are manageable, others are severe enough to kill. We are here to help change that by raising money for vital research to help find cures and treatments for common skin conditions like eczema or acne, through to potential killers like malignant melanoma. Founded in 1996, the British Skin Foundation has supported 400 research projects and awarded over £21 million in funding across all skin diseases. Whilst we are dedicated to raising money for research, we also aim to raise awareness of skin diseases in the wider community. We're committed to educating people about different skin conditions, helping to reduce stigma and promote understanding.
