For space enthusiasts, 2025 promises to be an exciting year packed with celestial events, discoveries, and cosmic phenomena.
As 2024 comes to a close, space exploration remains at the forefront of scientific breakthroughs, with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) leading the charge in transforming our understanding of the universe through its remarkable discoveries.
JWST has recently unveiled a massive ‘grand design’ spiral galaxy, designated A2744-GDSp-z4, dating back over 12 billion years. This exciting finding challenges existing models of galaxy formation — as such well-structured galaxies weren’t believed to exist so early in the universe’s history.
For curious minds, 2025 is shaping up to be a year full of cosmic wonders — from breathtaking astronomical events to exciting astrological shifts. Whether you’re looking to gaze at the stars, explore the mysteries of the universe, or discover personal insights through astrology, this year offers a wealth of opportunities to connect with the cosmos in new and meaningful ways.
Here are 7 key events to mark in your calendar…
1. The Quadrantid meteor shower
The New Year brings a dazzling display for stargazers as the Quadrantid meteor shower lights up the skies this January.
Active since 26 December, this meteor shower is approaching its peak on the nights of 3 and 4 January, with meteors visible until 12 January. If you’ve looked skyward recently, you might have already spotted some of these brilliant streaks crossing the heavens.
2. Rare ‘planetary parade’ – January 2025
In January and February 2025, six planets will form a giant arc in the evening sky; Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, and Saturn. At the end of February, Mercury will join the fun, replacing Saturn. This celestial phenomenon is known as a ‘planetary parade’ or ‘planetary alignment’, terms used in astronomy to describe when multiple planets appear to cluster together in a small area of the sky. This alignment is expected to be visible from January 21 through February 21, with peak viewing around January 29, when reduced light pollution due to the new moon will enhance visibility.
3. Jupiter and Uranus conjunction – February 2025
In February 2025, Jupiter and Uranus will align in a rare conjunction, where the two planets will appear unusually close together in the sky. This alignment offers a spectacular sight for stargazers and amateur astronomers. While the two planets won’t be physically near each other — they’re still millions of miles apart — their apparent proximity offers a unique opportunity to observe both simultaneously through a telescope. For those with an interest in planetary science, this event presents a chance to explore the dynamics of two of the solar system’s most fascinating gas giants.
4. NASA’s Artemis II Mission – Crewed Moon Mission
In 2025, NASA will launch Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. This mission will be a major step towards returning humans to the lunar surface as part of NASA’s long-term plan to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon. Artemis II will test the spacecraft and systems that will be used for future lunar landings, making it one of the most important milestones in space exploration. This mission is also a vital part of the plan to prepare for future missions to Mars, with technology and knowledge gained from Artemis II helping to propel humanity further into the solar system. 5. Mars exploration with NASA’s Perseverance Rover and Ingenuity Helicopter
In 2025, NASA’s Perseverance Rover and its companion, the Ingenuity helicopter, will continue to explore the surface of Mars, providing new insights into the planet’s geology and climate. Perseverance is tasked with searching for signs of ancient life, while Ingenuity, which made history with its first successful flight in 2021, will continue testing new aerial technologies on Mars. These missions are helping to prepare for future human exploration of Mars. Expect new discoveries about Mars’ habitability and further advancements in space technology as these missions evolve. 6. The return of the Perseid meteor shower – August 2025
The Perseid meteor shower, one of the most popular and reliable meteor showers, will peak in mid-August 2025. This annual event is caused by the Earth passing through the debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet. As the particles burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, they create the bright streaks of light we see as meteors. The Perseids are particularly exciting because they often produce a high number of meteors per hour, and with dark skies in many areas, this will be a perfect time for astrophotography and meteor watching.
7. Mars opposition – December 2025
In December 2025, Mars will reach opposition, which means it will be directly opposite the sun in the sky. This will make Mars appear particularly large and bright in the night sky, offering one of the best opportunities to observe the red planet in detail. During opposition, Mars is also closer to Earth, which means its surface features will be more visible through telescopes.
For those interested in planetary science, this is a prime opportunity to study Mars’ surface and atmosphere, as well as the ongoing research about its potential for human habitation. (see Sky & Telescope for more.)
There will also be four eclipses in 2025; 2 partial solar eclipses and 2 total lunar eclipses. These take place on the following dates:
- 14 March: Total lunar eclipse
- 29 March: Partial solar eclipse
- 7 September: Total lunar eclipse
- 21 September: Partial solar eclipse
Major planetary transits:
- Saturn and Neptune in Aries: Both Saturn and Neptune will enter Aries, marking Saturn’s first return since 1998 and Neptune’s since 1875. This alignment suggests a blend of discipline and imagination, potentially fostering innovative approaches to personal and collective endeavours.
- Uranus in Gemini: Uranus will transition into Gemini from July 7 to November 7, its first visit since 1941-49. This period may usher in rapid advancements in communication, technology, and social connections, encouraging adaptability and open-mindedness.
