New data has revealed an alarming surge in house fires linked to faulty e-bike conversion kits, with London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner Charlie Pugsley describing them as the “fastest growing fire trend” in London. 

Fire services across the UK have recorded a 204 percent increase in e-bike fires over the past two years, with a staggering 40 percent of e-bike explosions in London caused by unsafe battery packs — as reported by ITV News.

Poor quality conversion packs, which consist of a battery, a motor, a charger, and control gear, are being purchased online to convert regular bikes into electric bikes on the cheap, however a large number of these conversion kits feature poorly installed, damaged, or mismatched batteries and chargers, making them highly dangerous.

The LFB’s Deputy Commissioner Charlie Pugsley has called for urgent government action to ensure stricter product safety laws and conversion standards, and the removal of unsafe products from the market.

“When one of these fires starts, it can go from nothing to a fireball in under five seconds – that is just far more rapid than a normal fire,” he said.

London recorded 143 e-bike fires and 36 e-scooter fires in 2023, resulting in three deaths and more than 60 injuries. In total, 11 deaths were reported across the UK in 2023, as a consequence of faulty lithium batteries exploding.

As e-bikes become more popular, it’s crucial to prioritise safety and avoid DIY conversion kits and battery packs. The advice from London Fire Brigade is to:

  • always buy from a reputable seller;

  • only purchase a complete set with a matched battery and charger if buying a conversion kit, and to have it fitted by a competent professional;

  • Ensure the voltage of the battery matches the voltage of the charger.
