Rare baby Bongo born in UK as species nears extinction
Britain is celebrating a rare and exciting addition to the animal kingdom: the birth of an Eastern bongo antelope calf, one of fewer than 100 left in the wild. The endangered species, native to Kenya’s montane forests, is critically at risk due to habitat loss and poaching. The newborn, part of an ongoing conservation programme at Kent’s Port Lympne Reserve, marks a hopeful step in efforts to protect these striking, chestnut-coated antelopes, known for their distinctive white stripes and impressive, spiralled horns.

As one of the world’s rarest antelope species, the Eastern bongo’s survival relies heavily on managed breeding programmes and habitat protection efforts. The reserve, along with other conservation centres worldwide, is working to increase the global population and secure a sustainable future for these unique animals. The birth also brings renewed attention to the conservation status of other critically endangered species, highlighting the importance of continued support for wildlife preservation efforts.
