New initiative helps to restore dignity in crisis zones
Essex-based humanitarian charity Hope and Aid Direct has launched an inspiring initiative, ‘The World Needs Underwear’, to address a simple yet often overlooked need: clean underwear for people in crisis.
With 25 years of experience delivering aid donations to conflict zones, the charity highlights how such basic items are critical for restoring dignity, hygiene, and a sense of normalcy.
“Underwear is rarely donated but is one of the most requested items by our partner NGOs,” says Roger Wilson, trustee at Hope and Aid Direct. “Since we started operations 25 years ago, we’ve delivered 453 truckloads of aid, yet underwear donations are almost non-existent. This campaign aims to fill that gap, giving people the dignity and self-respect they deserve.”
The campaign is calling on UK communities and corporations to step up by donating new underwear in bulk, aiming to bridge this essential gap in aid, while offering an impactful opportunity for corporate social responsibility.
Partner organisations in crisis-affected areas like Ukraine and Lebanon emphasise how vital clean clothing is for health and well-being.

Atom Bank transforms former coal mine into a green initiative to offset carbon emissions
Atom Bank, a UK-based digital bank, has purchased 25 acres of woodland on a former open-cast coal mine site in Druridge Bay, Northumberland, as part of its sustainability efforts. The woodland, planted 18 months ago, features emerging trees like willow, sycamore, birch, alder, and rowan.
The initiative aligns with Atom Bank’s commitment to offset its carbon emissions and achieve a climate-positive status by 2035.
Mark Mullen, Atom’s CEO, said: “We’ve made this significant investment in an area local to Atom because we recognise the responsibility we have to our planet. We could have invested this money in employing more people or launching new products – as to be fair we usually do – but this time we chose trees. In time these trees should store more CO2 than our company has been responsible for emitting in all the years since we were founded.”
The direct ownership of the woodland enables Atom Bank to take full responsibility for its growth and management, distinguishing this hands-on approach from relying on carbon credits. The bank sees this initiative as providing an innovative model for financial institutions to contribute meaningfully to sustainability and lead in climate action. Read more of the story here.

Scientists develop ultra-thin nanofiber ‘spaghetti’ with life-changing medical potential
Researchers at University College London have developed the world’s thinnest “spaghetti” – nanofibers that are 200 times thinner than a human hair. Far from being a culinary novelty, these cutting-edge fibers offer groundbreaking medical applications. They could be used to create advanced bandages that promote wound healing (by allowing moisture in while blocking bacteria); serve as scaffolding for bone regeneration, and as a way to improve targeted drug delivery systems.

The team working on the project has taken an eco-conscious approach, crafting the nanofibers directly from starch-rich ingredients like flour, reducing the environmental impact of traditional production methods that rely heavily on energy and water.
It’s an exciting innovation that showcases how food-based ingredients can play a role in revolutionising healthcare technologies. More on the story here.
