The integration of AI into education represents a paradigm shift in the way we approach teaching and learning, and as it continues to evolve, it holds the promise of creating more inclusive, personalised, and effective educational experiences.

By harnessing the power of AI, educators and students alike are stepping into a future where education is not confined by traditional boundaries but is an adaptive, dynamic, and enriching journey tailored to the needs of each learner.

Quizlet, the global learning platform created in 2005, is utilising AI to help students master a whole range of subjects; everything from algebra to physics to French. The company has developed a new software called Q-Chat that provides virtual assistance to teachers and students, ensuring educational information can be gained quickly and effectively.

“We have been leveraging AI technology on our platform for going on 7 years now,” explains Crystal Braswell, Quizlet’s Interim Head of Marketing and Communications, as part of our programme EdTech: Innovating Teaching and Learning.

“What generative AI has allowed us to do is take a lot of the ideas and possibilities we thought could add value for students and bring those to life much faster than we ever imagined.”

Quizlet was founded in 2005 by Andrew Sutherland, a 15 year old student who was studying an advanced French course, and needed a way to be able to commit to memory over 100 French animal names. Seeking a more efficient method, he began creating a set of digital flashcards to aid in his studies. This initial project laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Quizlet.

Fast forward, almost 20 years later, and the business has over 60 million students and teachers that come to the platform every month.

In 2023, Quizlet launched Q-Chat, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which provides virtual assistance to students anywhere, anytime, day or night. They can interact with the Q-Chat tutor just as they would their regular tutor. It’s engaging, conversational and compels students not just to rote learn but to fully understand the material.

“It’s an AI-enhanced tutor,” says Vish Ungapen, Quizlet’s Senior Product Marketing Manager. “It’s really a conversational tutor that’s designed to be fun but effective at the same time. But it’s more than just a simple chatbot, it can really help students move on beyond basic memorisation and help them to really apply their thinking — and that gives them increased confidence. It helps them to build confidence in their learning but also confidence when they’re approaching a test or an exam as well.”

One of the key things about Q-Chat, is it’s built on the Socratic method, explains Meghann Lomas, Quizlet’s Senior Director of Product Management.

“We’re not trying to give answers, we want to add a bit of productive friction, just the same way a coach would try to encourage you to pull out the material that you know, test you to make sure you do actually know it, and then give you the tools to help you remember it. So it’s really a very personalised, one-on-one tutoring.”

This allows students to spend as much time as they want; whether they have three minutes, or an hour. Which Meghann believes is important for students who need flexibility within their schedules.

Quizlet’s AI platform is enabling students to learn more efficiently and effectively but it’s also assisting teachers by engaging their students both inside and outside the classroom. While teaching and assessment methods may have to adapt to ensure integrity is maintained, Quizlet knows it too has a responsibility.

“We need to be responsible in how we leverage these new technologies, and do it in a way where we’re working together with our users,” says Vish. “We’re constantly listening to our teachers, and our students, seeking feedback from them, and incorporating that feedback back into the products we build.

AI offers us a powerful tool to reshape education, and Quizlet is empowering future generations in ways that were previously unimaginable for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
