On Wednesday, 13 November 2024, the UK will celebrate National Engineering Day, a day dedicated to showcasing engineering’s role in shaping the world and inspiring a new generation of talent to tackle some of society’s greatest challenges.

Hosted annually, National Engineering Day is about recognition, but it’s also about mobilising young minds to see engineering as a powerful, creative field with endless possibilities for impactful careers.

This year’s theme is ‘engineering role models’, with the campaign’s mission to inspire the public to marvel at the creativity of engineers, to be awestruck by their achievements, and recognise the incredible feats of engineering that surround us. The initiative also aims to showcase the vast, diverse possibilities within engineering, inviting more young people — from a variety of backgrounds — to explore careers in the field.

Why is celebrating National Engineering Day important?

National Engineering Day aims to highlight how engineering influences every aspect of our daily lives, from the infrastructure we rely on — such as roads, bridges and buildings — to advanced technology, green energy, and medical innovations. It’s an opportunity to educate the public about the diverse field of engineering, debunk myths, and make it clear that engineering is a vibrant, people-centred profession.

Across the country, organisations, schools, and universities will mark the day with events, workshops, and talks from industry experts. Activities are designed to engage all types of students, helping them understand that engineering is not just about hard hats and blueprints, but involves exciting sectors like artificial intelligence, space exploration, and sustainable design.

Why engineering is at the heart of solutions

With so many pressing global issues and urgent needs around climate change, energy solutions, and advanced healthcare, the demand for engineers who can address these challenges is greater than ever — especially as we face a global push towards net zero, decarbonisation, and smarter technology.

Currently, the UK is grappling with a shortage of skilled engineers, particularly in emerging fields like renewable energy, robotics, and digital infrastructure.

Research indicates that the sector faces a shortfall of one million engineers by 2030 due to the impending retirement of a fifth (20 per cent) of the existing engineering workforce over the next five years.

According to Engineering UK, an estimated 59,000 engineers and technicians are needed annually just to keep pace with demand in the green economy. 

The role of the next generation in engineering

Young people today will play a crucial role in the engineering advancements of tomorrow. As industries evolve, so does the nature of the skills required. The next generation of engineers will need expertise in both traditional fields, such as civil and mechanical engineering, and newer disciplines like environmental engineering, biotechnology, and cyber-physical systems.

By highlighting stories of successful engineers from diverse backgrounds, National Engineering Day seeks to build a talent pipeline that reflects the diversity of the UK itself.
