BIFA’s Steve Parker on supporting the UK’s international trade
For our 2024 programme, Transforming Logistics: Precision and Purpose, ITN Business spoke to Steve Parker, Director General of the British International Freight Association (BIFA).
International trade is a cornerstone of the UK economy, with exports accounting for around 31% of the country’s total GDP. The global exchange of goods and services allows the UK to maintain a robust, interconnected economy, generating income from markets worldwide. This highlights the importance of sectors like logistics and freight forwarding, which are critical for ensuring the smooth movement of goods across borders.
In our interview, Steve emphasises how global freight forwarding and logistics operations play a pivotal role in the UK’s trade activities. These services underpin complex supply chains, enabling the timely delivery of goods and reducing potential disruptions.
Efficient logistics operations help businesses access global markets more easily, supporting sectors ranging from manufacturing and retail to pharmaceuticals and technology.
With the UK aiming to expand its trading relationships post-Brexit, these logistics operations become even more vital in maintaining strong trade links. They ensure the smooth flow of imports and exports, supporting industries and keeping the UK’s economy competitive on a global scale.
