Innovation in the food and beverage sector needs to keep up with the urgent need to provide healthy and sustainable food for everyone, as consumers place more importance on their wellbeing and that of the planet.

The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) is calling for a collaborative approach to find solutions to the challenges our food systems face.

In this interview, as part of our Food & Drink: Powers our Nation programme, their Chief Executive, Tim McLachlan, shares how the food science and technology landscape has changed over the last 60 years, and the outlook for food policies in an ever changing industry.

Tim also appeals to young people who are weighing up career options to consider the food and drink industry as an exciting prospect, that offers great opportunities for growth and innovation.

“The next generation are the key to new ideas,” Tim tells our presenter. “We see a lot of young people think, ‘Where could I go and work?’ They don’t think of the food sector… but there are opportunities to travel, opportunities to grow, move between companies, innovate, and see their ideas come to fruition…”
